The first packet of carrot seeds I ever bought said to sow directly where they were to grow, thin to five centimetres apart once they germinated, and stand back. I sowed them in a shallow drill in early April, covered them over, and waited. Slugs ate most of them as they germinated. Heavy rain compacted the soil surface into something close to a crust that the remaining seedlings struggled to push through. The ones that did come up were spaced entirely at random, nothing like the five centimetres the packet suggested, and most of them got outcompeted by weeds before I thinned them because I could not tell, at two centimetres tall, which tiny green shoots were carrot seedlings and which were annual weeds.

Direct sowing works. It's also significantly more demanding of conditions than the instructions on most seed packets imply, and understanding why it fails so consistently for beginners changes how you approach the whole question of whether to sow directly or start in pots.

What Direct Sowing Actually Requires to Work Well

A seed sown directly into garden soil is competing with everything else in that soil from the moment it germinates. Weed seeds, which exist in enormous numbers in most garden soil and which germinate readily alongside vegetable seeds in warm spring conditions, are among the most efficient competitors imaginable. They have been selected by thousands of years of evolution for exactly this situation: germinating fast, establishing quickly, and outcompeting neighbouring plants for light, water, and nutrients in disturbed cultivated ground. A vegetable seedling has been selected by humans for taste, yield, and ornamental characteristics, not for competitive vigour in open ground. The weed almost always has the advantage in a direct competition.

The soil surface is the second problem. Most garden soil, particularly clay-heavy soil and any soil that has been recently dug and then rained on, forms a surface crust as fine particles wash into the spaces between larger ones and then dry. Seeds germinating below this crust push upward against resistance rather than into open air, which slows emergence and can stop it entirely for small seeds without the stored energy to push through. This is why carrots, parsnips, and other fine-seeded crops that must be direct sown because they don't transplant well are so consistently difficult: their seeds are small, their energy reserves are limited, and they emerge slowly into conditions that challenge them from the first moment.

Why Starting in Pots Changes the Equation

A seed started in a pot of fresh seed compost is in a completely different situation. The compost has no weed seeds, or very few if it is a quality product, so the seedling emerges without competition. The compost structure is open and consistent, meaning emergence happens quickly and without resistance. The pot can be kept somewhere sheltered where slug and snail activity is lower, removing one of the most consistent causes of seedling loss at the most vulnerable stage. And by the time the seedling is transplanted into the garden, it is large enough to be recognisable, large enough to be clearly visible among any weeds that emerge alongside it, and established enough to compete.

This is the genuine advantage of pot-starting over direct sowing, and it applies more broadly than most guides acknowledge. The conventional advice is that crops like tomatoes, peppers, and brassicas must be started under cover, while crops like carrots, parsnips, beans, and peas should be direct sown. The first part is accurate: these crops either need a longer season than direct outdoor sowing can provide, or they establish too slowly outdoors to compete. The second part is more nuanced. Beans and peas direct sow successfully because their seeds are large and have enough stored energy to emerge quickly and strongly under most conditions. Carrots and parsnips must be direct-sown because they don't transplant well, which makes them genuinely more difficult for beginners rather than easier. The advice to sow directly is a statement about what is agronomically necessary, not about what will produce reliable results in average garden conditions.

The Crops Where Pot Starting Produces Better Results Than Direct Sowing

Lettuce and salad leaves are the clearest example of a crop that the instructions say to direct sow, but that produces better and more reliable results for most home gardeners when started in small pots or modules and transplanted. The seedlings establish visibly, can be transplanted at a size where they are easy to space correctly, and go into the ground already past the stage where slugs can do their worst. The conventional wisdom that salad leaves should be sown directly is not wrong exactly, but it produces results that depend heavily on slug pressure, weed competition, and surface conditions that vary enormously between gardens. Starting in modules removes all three variables.

Courgettes, squash, and cucumbers are usually started under cover for season-length reasons, but even where the growing season is long enough to direct sow, starting in pots produces more reliable germination and establishment. These seeds germinate well in pots of warm compost and can be transplanted as sturdy young plants with several true leaves, at which point they establish quickly and slug pressure is not a serious risk. Direct sown in open ground, they germinate more slowly, emerge into slug territory at the most vulnerable stage, and in a cool, wet spring may rot in the ground entirely before germination occurs.

This does not mean direct sowing is without value or that everything should go through pots. Succession sowing of salad crops is much easier to manage with direct sowing once you have a feel for the conditions in your garden. Root vegetables that cannot be transplanted must go directly, regardless. And crops like climbing beans and peas, with their large seeds and fast establishment, are perfectly well suited to direct sowing in most conditions. The question worth asking is not what the packet says but what the crop actually needs to establish reliably, and whether your garden's specific conditions of weed pressure, slug activity, and surface soil quality support that.

Making Direct Sowing More Reliable When It Is Necessary

For crops that genuinely must go direct, a few specific measures close the gap between the ideal conditions the packet assumes and the variable conditions most gardens provide. Covering the seeded area with fleece immediately after sowing protects the germinating seeds from slug activity, reduces surface crust formation by breaking the force of heavy rain, and raises the temperature around the seeds slightly, all of which accelerate and improve germination. Removing the fleece once seedlings are visibly established and past the most vulnerable stage keeps them protected through the window where losses are highest. Most vegetable-growing failures concentrate in the first few weeks after sowing, and protecting that window specifically produces a disproportionate improvement in results.

Conclusion

The carrot failure in my first season was not a failure of the technique. It was a failure of the conditions that direct sowing requires to work, none of which my garden provided reliably that spring. The advice to sow where they are to grow is accurate and, for carrots, unavoidable, but it describes what to do without describing what needs to be true for it to work. Understanding the difference between the two, and knowing when to start in a pot instead of direct sowing because the conditions are more controlled and the outcome more reliable, is what changes a gardener who follows instructions with mixed results into one who understands enough about why things succeed or fail to make better decisions in their own specific conditions.
